Chakras

Chakras are the centres of subtle, vital energy in the Sushumna Nadi. They are storage places of energy forces or centres of consciousness. These chakras have corresponding centres in the spinal cord and the nerve plexuses in the gross physical body. Since the physical centres have a close relationship with the astral centres, the vibrations that are produced in the physical centres by prescribed methods have desired effects in the astral centres. Each chakra represents a state of consciousness. It is a centre of subtle awareness and has a specific feeling, tone, bliss or joy. It is, in effect, a storage place for energy forces. A particular characteristic predominates at every chakra. There is a presiding deity in each chakra. The seven principle chakras correspond to the seven astral or mental planes.

1 Muladhara Chakra: located at the lower end of the spinal column, corresponds to the sacral plexus. Meditation on Muladhara confers knowledge of the Kundalini; it bestows breath and mind control, and knowledge of past, present and future.

2 Swadhishtana Chakra: at the genital organs, corresponds to the prostate plexus, controls the lower abdomen in the physical body. Meditation on Swadhishtana's crescent moon confers psychic powers, intuitional knowledge and knowledge of astral entities. Many impure qualities are annihilated.

3 Manipura Chakra: at the navel, corresponds to the solar plexus. Concentration on Manipura Chakra removes fear of fire and gives freedom from disease.

4 Anahata Chakra: at the heart region, corresponds to the cardiac plexus. Meditation on Anahata Chakra bestows pure qualities, cosmic love and various psychic powers.

5 Visuddha Chakra: at the base of throat, corresponds to the laryngeal plexus in the physical body. Meditation on Visuddha Chakra helps to know the past, present and future.

6 Ajna Chakra: between the eyebrows. Ajna the seat of the mind corresponds to the cavernous plexus. Meditation on the Ajna Chakra destroys the karma of past lives, and gives liberation and intuitional knowledge. It is here that Yogis consciously put prana at the time of death.

7 Sahasrara Chakra: at the crown of the head, above and beyond the other six centres, is situated at the crown of the head, corresponding to the pineal gland of the physical body. When Kundalini Shakti is united with Siva at the Sahasrara, the Yogi experiences extreme bliss, attains the super conscious state, the highest knowledge, and becomes a fully developed Jnani.

When the Kundalini is awakened, it passes from the Muladhara through all the chakras. At every centre to which Yogi directs the Kundalini, a special form of bliss is experienced. Siddhis, or psychic powers, and knowledge are gained.
